About the project

The Gold Coast Waterways Authority is improving access to the waterways by dredging the West Crab Island navigation channel and beneficially reusing the material to nourish the beach on South Stradbroke Island.

The benefits of this project included:

  • Improved channel connectivity (i.e. the north/south linkage)
  • Improved access for deeper draft vessels
  • Improved safety through the removal of shoaling
  • Improved access to eastern canals adjacent to the West Crab Island Channel
  • Placement of dredged material into the South Stradbroke Island deposition site to replenish eroded sand, increase resilience to storms and provide habitat.

Dredging volume

The West Crab Island channel dredging project had a dredging volume of 35,000 m3.
